Happy Hour Test Drive: Hemingway’s Cuba

Hemingway’s Cuba is a dreamy spot perched atop the Cambria Hotel in downtown Asheville. Inspired by the famed writer Earnest Hemingway, this rooftop bar offers an instant Havana vibe with sleek white loungers, fire pits and colorful cocktails.  With views of Asheville’s cityscape and the Blue Ridge, this Cuban-style happy hour is just what you need to wind down a busy week.

Atmosphere

It was Girl’s Night Out and our mission was to start the evening off with cocktails and rooftop views.  We had heard the views at Hemingway’s Cuba were phenomenal, but were quite blown away upon settling into the rooftop patio.  We opted to sit at a table, though the loungers and fire pits were hard to resist.  It’s easy to get comfortable fireside on Asheville’s cool Spring evenings.

Cocktails

The cocktail menu is Cuban themed, whose most notable cocktail is the Hemingway’s Daiquiri- a namesake for the restaurant’s history and inspiration.  Ultimately we narrowed it down to fresh, crisp, tropical cocktails and some old favorites.

Hemingway's Asheville
Cuban Mojito: flor de cana, 4 yr rum, lime, mint, soda, sugar & angostura bitters
Hemingways Asheville
Moscow Mule: vodka, spicy ginger beer, & lime juice
Hemingway's Asheville
Martini: gin, vermouth & olives
hemingway's Asheville
Death in the Afternoon: havana club anejo blanco, apricot liquer, pineapple & lime

Snacks

We shared the Ceviche Mixto with gulf shrimp and NC coastal catch, marinated in lime juice, cilantro, red onions, and avocado.  It was fresh and light, pairing well with the Mojito and Death in the Afternoon, highlighting the citrus and fresh herbs in both drinks.

Wanting something to balance out the lightness of the cerviche, we chose the Alitas de Pollo al Mojo.  Frenched chicken wings, marinated in mojo seasoning and cooked to perfection.  The wings came right off the bone and the mojito sauce was spot on, making it an easy dish to share and enjoy.

Overall, Hemingway’s scores high on the dreamy vibe.  You can’t beat that view and it completely steals the show.  The cocktails and snacks made it that much more enjoyable and tasty.  It’s the ideal way to reset after a busy afternoon and leave it up to the Blue Ridge and Cuba to do the rest!

[…] Hemingway’s Cuba opened a few months ago and we’ve been smitten with their traditional cuban fare, served in what might be the most amazing view in Asheville, ever since. We’re not the only ones who have been enchanted. One of our favorite local blogs; Asheville Date Night, spent an evening at this great new establishment and had lots of wonderful things to say about it. Below is part of that article- and the full story can be read here. […]
